The University of Southern California closed the gates to its campus on Wednesday after hundreds of pro-Palestinian students and protesters began an “occupation” of the school’s Alumni Park.

The demonstration was mainly peaceful, but there were some tense moments as officers detained some protesters.

USC’s demonstration was one of many spreading at college campuses across the U.S., with encampments now established at Brown University, the University of Michigan, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and California State Polytechnic and Humboldt.

Students are demanding that their schools cut financial ties with Israel amid the ongoing war.
